Why should I consider a storm shelter?
- When severe weather threatens, individuals and families need protection from the dangerous forces of extreme winds and adverse weather conditions. You should provide a safe shelter for yourself, your family, and your pets.
Will the shelter meet FEMA standards?
- Yes. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) strives to reduce loss of life and property and protect our nation's critical infrastructure from all types of hazards through a comprehensive, risk-based, emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
How much will the shelter cost?
- Typical cost ranges from $2,595 to $10,000 depending on installation constraints and the design you choose.
- We will also work with you if you would like to install the shelter yourself, saving installation fees.
What types of financing are available?

What are the shelters made of and is there a warranty?
- Our shelters are made of 4" steel reinforced concrete, and there is a 10 year warranty on installation and parts and a lifetime warranty on the concrete.
What type and size of shelters are available?
- Slant Top 6.25'x6.5'x6.5'

How does the shelter provide fresh air?
- Through a 12" ventilation tube with a rotation turbine.
How long does it take to install the shelter?
- Concrete shelters can be installed in as little as 3 or 4 hours, depending on the location of installation on property and availability of a distributor in your area.
Are there any obstacles to installing the shelters?
- Our certified McKittrick Precast installers will perform an on-site inspection to evaluate possible obstacles. Some conditions that may have to be considered are bedrock, high water table, underground lines, and frozen ground. Obviously there may be phone, water, gas, electric or sewer lines that may have to be considered. We will work with you to ensure safe placement of the shelter.
What type of entrance does the shelter have?
- There is one steel storm door with heavy duty steel hinges. Also included are handrails in the stairway, non-skid steps and benches.
Does the shelter have seating and lighting?
- Benches are included, and an inlet to run power into the shelter is also provided. Tap lighting (battery powered) is included at no additional cost.
How much yard space do you need?
- For an underground shelter, we like to have an 8' opening for the excavator and normally need at least 2' larger than the shelter you choose.
